By 2016, health trackers had become ubiquitous in the wearable technology sector. However, with products offering nearly identical functionalities, differentiation became increasingly difficult, impacting both competitiveness and profit margins. This challenge led us to rethink the core of business value and seek opportunities where design could create a meaningful advantage.
Recognizing the cultural significance of religion, we turned our attention to the spiritual market. In Taiwan alone, Buddhism and Taoism account for over 66% of the population and wield considerable influence across Asia. This deep-rooted cultural landscape presented a unique and promising opportunity for integrating technology with tradition in a way that resonated with users on a personal and spiritual level.
Background
During our design research, we observed that many prayer bead users hold a separate tally counter while reciting their prayers, manually tracking their repetitions. This revealed an opportunity to enhance their experience by integrating this functionality more seamlessly into the prayer beads themselves. While smart prayer beads already exist in the market, we noticed that most simply transplant the features of a standard fitness tracker into a religious accessory, often overlooking the deeper cultural and spiritual significance of the beads.
Instead of following this approach, we aimed to develop a more intuitive and meaningful solution—one that not only enhances usability but also respects the essence of prayer beads through thoughtful, customizable features that align with their spiritual purpose.

Unlocking a High-Potential Market
The inspiration has led to a comprehensive service design concept that goes beyond simply selling the Smart Bead device—it envisions an entire ecosystem. As illustrated in the concept graphic below, our vision includes not only offering the product to a tech company but also providing long-term maintenance services through our own company.
Collaboration with religious organizations, particularly within Buddhism and Taoism, is key to fostering a virtual forum where users can engage, share, and deepen their spiritual practice. Additionally, integrating with vendors to create an online marketplace for related merchandise will enhance the overall experience, transforming the Smart Bead from a standalone device into a connected and enriching ecosystem.

Introducing
the APP 菩提 (Bodhi)
This is Bodhi, a dedicated companion app for smart prayer beads. The name "Bodhi" is derived from Buddhist teachings, symbolizing enlightenment and wisdom. With the Bodhi app, users no longer need an additional counter to keep track of their recitations. The app's intelligent algorithm accurately detects the movement patterns of the smart beads, automatically counting each rotation to enhance focus and devotion.
In Buddhism, Bodhi represents the path to awakening and liberation. By integrating technology with spiritual practice, the Bodhi app aims to help practitioners seamlessly incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives, fostering inner peace and enlightenment.

We analyze users' habits and patterns when using prayer beads, along with various detection methods, to design a system that accurately detects and recognizes the rotational patterns of the beads. Once identified as a prayer bead movement, the system automatically counts the number of rotations.
In traditional customs, there are two common methods of using prayer beads. Most people recite the Buddha’s name, “Namo Amitabha”(南無阿彌陀佛), while moving one bead at a time. Once they complete a full cycle and return to the mother bead, some practitioners continue in the same direction, while others reverse the direction of movement.
Another more common method is to move one bead for each syllable of the recitation, advancing bead by bead as they chant.

This is the primary function we've crafted for our product, refining the Beads to perfectly align with its purpose. It's designed to aid users in finding calmness and focus during their practice and prayer sessions. Our patented Smart Beads algorithm eliminates the need for traditional counting methods, such as using a distracting old-fashioned counting watch, by seamlessly tracking counts for the user.
Our product offers a diverse array of Buddhist scriptures. Users can effortlessly select any scripture for study and prayer.
With this approach, users can pray with smart beads without the hassle of counting. Let the app and smart beads keep track for you—just focus on having a peaceful mind and wholeheartedly engaging in prayer.

While many smart bands offer standard features, we aim to go beyond the norm. Inspired by the practice of "助念" prevalent in religious societies, where individuals extend blessings to others for improved health and good fortune, we introduce a unique addition.
We propose implementing a Points Rule system, where users accumulate points through daily activities such as bead prayer, meditation, exercise, or even regular walks. These points not only contribute to users' overall health but also enable them to share blessings with loved ones, relatives, and friends. This innovative feature fosters a sense of interconnectedness and well-being among users and their communities.
Smart Beads seamlessly integrate mindfulness and physical activity into daily life by transforming spiritual practice into a measurable and rewarding experience. Every recitation recorded by the app is converted into merit points, allowing users to track their progress and stay motivated in their practice. Beyond counting recitations, Smart Beads also recognize the value of meditation, walking, and jogging by measuring the time spent on these activities and monitoring heart rate stability. This holistic approach acknowledges both mental and physical well-being, reinforcing the idea that mindfulness extends beyond stillness and into movement.
By earning merit points through consistent practice, users develop a deeper connection with their spiritual journey while cultivating inner peace. The steady accumulation of points serves as both a reflection of dedication and a gentle encouragement to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Our app is designed to be a comprehensive spiritual lifestyle platform — one that brings together a wide range of vendors offering religious and spiritual merchandise. While this market has often been overlooked by mainstream tech, it represents a loyal, values-driven, and stable community with meaningful purchasing power.
A key part of our platform is the Merchandise Marketplace, where users can explore and purchase a curated selection of religious goods — from prayer beads, candles, and ritual tools to furnishings and spiritual jewelry. These items come from trusted, often hard-to-find vendors, giving users easier access to quality products without the guesswork. Prices can be compared, and Blessing Points can be used for discounts or special offers.
Buddhist Affinity Market: Giving with Purpose
We also encourage a spirit of recycling and mindful giving. The Buddhist Affinity Market is a special space within the app where users can pass along items that still hold value — whether spiritual, emotional, or practical — to those who need them more. Instead of cash, these goods are exchanged using Merit Points, earned through personal practice using our Smart Beads.
The more you engage in prayer or meditation with the Smart Beads, the more points you earn. These points not only unlock items in the Affinity Market but also represent the Buddhist idea of "yuan (緣)" — the meaningful connections and karmic bonds between people.
This system allows users to give and receive in a way that promotes sustainability, generosity, and spiritual growth. Have something valuable you no longer need? Offer it in the Affinity Market and trade for something more aligned with your current path. It’s a modern, thoughtful approach to community sharing.

We aim to support small, traditional, and often family-run religious businesses by giving them a digital presence. This benefits both the seller — who gains a new audience — and the buyer, who gains convenient access to authentic goods that might otherwise be difficult to find or overpriced in niche shops.
Art Gallery & Cultural Commerce
Art Gallery feature offers a unique opportunity to promote religious and spiritual artists. Through virtual exhibitions and direct connections with artists, users can experience and purchase meaningful artwork — bringing a new dimension of beauty and soul into their spiritual journey, while supporting creative talent.
We believe that the Buddhist market is not just about commodities and Buddhist supplies. There are many collectors who even integrate Buddhist art into their lives, collecting it at high prices. Consequently, this has formed a significant and noteworthy market. However, during our development team's discussions, we concluded that it would be difficult to build a high-value transaction platform specifically for these expensive artworks. The reason for this isn't the difficulty of designing the platform's mechanisms, but rather considering the buyer's perspective. For such high-priced artworks, the depth of knowledge required for artistic appreciation varies greatly, making it challenging to establish a standard for buyers to use as a reference. Secondly, buyers of high-value products will place greater emphasis on inspecting the quality details in person.
Putting ourselves in their shoes, if I were a buyer looking to purchase an artwork more expensive than a car or even a house, I certainly wouldn't place an order on an online platform. If possible, I would visit the location in person to examine the artwork before making a purchase decision.
Therefore, we have changed our design approach for this platform. Instead, we will design a highly credible and official information platform where art sellers can post auction times, locations, and the background stories of their artworks. Through this platform, a wide range of consumers and buyers can learn about and obtain auction information, and it might even offer features like booking viewing appointments. These numerous possibilities greatly increase the future scalability of this platform.

While this concept is easy to articulate, it's much more challenging to realize. There are many design considerations and technical challenges that must be addressed.
Design Philosophy Behind the Smart Buddhist Bead
Our core design philosophy for this smart Buddhist bead bracelet is to provide users with an authentic experience—one that feels like wearing traditional Buddhist beads rather than a piece of technology.
One of the first and most critical challenges was eliminating visible parting lines. Most electronic products feature upper and lower housings that are snapped together, secured with screws, and include openings for USB charging. If we followed this conventional approach, it would be impossible to break free from traditional design thinking and truly embody our philosophy.
Through extensive research and concept development, we realized how jarring it would be to see visible seams or charging ports on what is meant to be a spiritual object. Additionally, a USB port would compromise waterproofing—a concern since users might wear the bracelet while washing their hands. This led us to pose a few key design questions:
If we eliminate parting lines, how can we insert the electronic components during manufacturing and assembly? Can the seams be fully concealed afterward?
How can we ensure the product is waterproof?
If we remove the USB port, how can the device be charged when power runs low?
From a CMF (Color, Material, Finish) perspective, how can we use plastic to realistically mimic the texture of wood, making it indistinguishable to users?
How can we embed interactive features into the beads without compromising the aesthetic?

Based on this repair-free approach, we restructured the production sequence. Once the electronic modules are fully assembled and tested for quality, we move directly to product assembly and aesthetic finishing. This process is irreversible. After the components are placed inside the housing, the two halves are sealed via ultrasonic welding. This not only ensures strong waterproofing but also removes the need for seams or screw holes.
Sealed Design Process
Once sealed, the beads become smooth, waterproof plastic spheres. We then apply hydro dipping to achieve a wood-like appearance. First, each bead is polished to remove surface imperfections or line marks. Then, they are dipped in a water tank containing a wood-grain film. Afterward, we apply UV coating—a matte translucent finish in a warm wood tone—to enhance realism. The result is a set of plastic beads nearly indistinguishable from real wood.
To further distance the product from traditional electronics, we decided to eliminate USB charging altogether. Instead, we implemented wireless charging, a more user-friendly and discreet solution. This allows the bracelet to remain completely sealed, fulfilling our waterproofing requirements while maintaining a seamless design.
For user interaction, we integrated an LED indicator into the beads via laser engraving. We selected a lotus flower as the icon, aligning with the overall design theme. When illuminated, the soft glow provides visual feedback for notifications and Bluetooth pairing, while also evoking the image of a lotus pedestal beneath a Buddha—reinforcing the spiritual symbolism.

From the manufacturer's standpoint, we began by asking an important question: Can we eliminate the need for repair and instead offer a product replacement, assuming production costs are well managed?
This decision significantly shaped the direction of our design. Given that the bracelet uses very few, compact electronic components, repairing the product might cost more than simply replacing it. If this holds true, we can shift resources from designing for disassembly toward enhancing quality control during R&D and manufacturing—ultimately reducing the likelihood of failure in the first place.

Unlike typical electronic products, our design philosophy aspires to stay closer to nature. This is reflected not only in the functional primary bead of the bracelet but also in the secondary beads, which are all genuinely crafted from wood rather than plastic. This choice better aligns with the habits and spiritual values of Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, enhancing both usability and collectible value.
CMF & Wood Color Scheme
In terms of material selection, we conducted in-depth research into the characteristics and philosophies of both Buddhism and Taoism, exploring the symbolic meanings of prayer beads and the material preferences among users. From this, we compiled a list of favored wood types, as shown in the wood material chart below.
When determining our selection criteria, we considered user preferences and market feasibility. Rather than opting for the rarest and most valuable woods—which are difficult to source and expensive—we embraced the humble and modest principles of Buddhist and Taoist aesthetics. We chose more accessible, user-favored woods with higher acceptance among broader consumer groups.
Tibetan Cypress (崖柏)
It’s specifically wood with a natural, Light wood brown and elegant ripple grain. This wood emits a sweet and mellow fragrance, known for its calming effects on the mind.
Red Sanders (小葉紫檀)
It also known as Indian Rosewood. It presents a deep reddish to almost black hue and carries a subtle, cool aroma. Traditionally, it is believed to have protective spiritual properties, helping to ward off negativity while also soothing the mind and stabilizing emotions.

For the first batch of products, it is not feasible to mass-produce all listed wood types. Therefore, we must strategically narrow down to two or three recommended wood selections for production. Among the most popular options, we suggest selecting one dark-toned and one light-toned wood to establish the product's core color palette. These selected woods will also influence the visual design used in hydro dipping applications.
For the light-toned option, we selected Tibetan Cypress (崖柏). And for the dark-toned option, we selected Red Sanders (小葉紫檀), also known as Zitan. Which shows in the following images.
