A Straight Path

HONOR

Magicbook V14

The V Series laptop represents the pinnacle of HONOR’s notebook lineup, designed specifically for professionals—leaders, engineers, educators, businesspeople, and more. The concept of “一” means the First one, the character just like Straight line aligns perfectly with those businessperson who appreciate sharp, precise aesthetics and value clarity and structure in both work and design. It speaks to individuals who constantly seek greater efficiency and organization—people who are effective, realistic, and driven. These characteristics form the core inspiration behind our design direction and innovation philosophy for the V Series.

For HONOR, becoming independent from Huawei marked a brand-new beginning. It opened up opportunities to explore fresh perspectives and innovative designs. However, at the early stage of independence, resources were limited, so we had to carefully evaluate the most strategically beneficial direction for product integration under the HONOR brand. While we could have chosen to focus on gaming laptops, high-performance models, or ultra-thin devices, it was not feasible to pursue all directions simultaneously. Doing so could confuse consumers and dilute brand clarity.

To build a strong and distinctive identity, it was necessary to define a clear starting point in our design strategy and concentrate our efforts where we could deliver the most meaningful impact. This meant aligning product development with the evolving needs of our target audience, emphasizing a balance between professionalism, reliability, and modern aesthetics. By narrowing our focus, we aimed to lay a solid foundation that could support HONOR's long-term growth in the competitive PC market while establishing a consistent and recognizable design language across our lineup.

Design Background

Leveraging HONOR’s inherited strengths from Huawei, the seamless interaction between smartphones and laptops—such as instant photo and file sharing—became a key advantage, especially for business users. This naturally guided us to position the product strategy of our first laptop in the business category. Yet, in terms of specifications, we preserved the potential to evolve the business laptop into a high-performance business-class machine.

As the first product of HONOR’s newly independent brand, this project held unique meaning for me as the designer. I began gathering keywords to inspire my creative thinking—such as “professional business partner,” “efficient assistant,” and “productivity master.” I envisioned what this product should embody: solid, durable, and dependable. I was also deeply curious about the lifestyle and values that business professionals aspire to. In contemplating these words—professionalism, precision, and efficiency—I suddenly found inspiration in the Chinese character 「一」(meaning “one” or a straight line). This character is minimalist and powerful—a single, clean stroke that represents the beginning. It felt like the perfect symbol for HONOR’s first notebook.

Inspiration

No. One / First Badge / Beginning

Just one Simple and Efficient Straight line inspire the whole design concept.

The design language for business-oriented products centers around three key pillars: professionalism, clarity with efficiency, and a sense of modern trustworthiness. Our target user is a focused professional—someone who values precision, reliability, and purpose in both their tools and their lifestyle. Think business leaders, consultants, executives, educators, and technical specialists. These individuals demand more than just performance; they expect a product that reflects their mindset—organized, intentional, and forward-looking.

The business design direction isn't just about how it looks—it's about how it feels to use. Clear, confident, efficient. A product that becomes an extension of the modern professional’s rhythm.

Business-oriented Product Design Keys

Color palettes are restrained and authoritative: black, charcoal gray, deep navy, silver, and white—occasionally accented with gold or dark brown to suggest trust, calmness, and leadership. Typography emphasizing legibility and clarity. Layouts are structured, well-aligned, and hierarchical, built to support logical communication and data presentation.

1. Professionalism

Every element serves a purpose. There's no room for decorative excess—only what enhances clarity and function remains.
Spacing and visual rhythm are carefully considered, allowing key information to breathe and resonate. The design communicates directly, prioritizing speed and accuracy of understanding.

2. Minimalism & Efficiency

Straight, confident lines define the aesthetic—a metaphor for efficiency, focus, and directness.
Premium materials such as brushed metal, textured leather surfaces, and glass convey a balance of technological sophistication and tactile reliability. This visual language reassures the user while reinforcing a sense of cutting-edge professionalism.

3. Trust & Contemporary Identity

Images & Persona

When reviewing the personas and design references for business products, the idea of the “straight line” repeatedly appeared. This affirmed the kind of image a businessperson seeks to project—efficient, precise, and stable. This became the foundational design concept for the laptop.

The side view of the laptop emphasizes clean, straight lines that run consistently along the body, projecting a sense of order and clarity. This linear design reflects the professional mindset—focused, precise, and efficient—while the subtle taper adds a refined sense of direction and purpose.
Every element, from the port layout to the wedge-shaped profile, is aligned with this streamlined silhouette. It’s a design that speaks to users who value structure, speed, and sharp thinking—professionals who need their tools to be as focused and functional as they are.

Design

For the corner treatment, we applied a C2 continuous round based on Bézier curve principles. This allows the curvature to flow seamlessly from the straight lines, creating a smooth and natural transition. The result is a corner that feels both refined and cohesive—softening the silhouette without compromising the overall sharpness.

The key challenge was: how do we take this minimalist vision and execute it better—perhaps even better than Huawei? We embraced a reductive design philosophy by simplifying form elements and focusing on the essentials. This was especially critical on the laptop’s B-side (the screen) and C-side (keyboard area), where users interact most.

On the screen side, we removed the traditional rubber frame around the edges. Based on past user data, opening and closing the lid under normal use doesn’t damage the screen—much like Apple’s iPads, which also don’t use rubber frames. The real threat to screen damage typically comes from foreign objects between the screen and keyboard. That said, we designed the metal edge of the lid to be 0.05mm higher than the glass panel—an almost imperceptible height that significantly improves screen safety. This subtle detail is one of the “design secrets” of this laptop and elevates the minimalist visual appeal.

We also redesigned the keycap concavity across the new keyboard set, introducing what we call the “Cradle” type. Each keycap gently supports the fingertips for improved typing comfort, while the smooth-touch coating enhances tactile feel and resists scratches for long-lasting durability. Combined with a 1.5mm key travel, this delivers a noticeably more satisfying and responsive typing experience.

Comfort typing Experience for your fingers

On the keyboard side, from a user’s perspective—have you ever found yourself distracted by an overly decorative power button while deep in thought? We wanted to avoid that. Unlike the designs of Huawei or Lenovo, we integrated the fingerprint power button within the keyboard layout itself. This created a more symmetrical, focused interface, offering visual balance and encouraging user concentration. We deliberately avoided excessive lines or flashy elements, emphasizing instead a design that quietly supports the user—a thoughtful detail rather than a flashy feature.

Minimalism

Another smart addition was assigning the F3 key to a touchpad-disable function. Many users pair their laptops with a mouse, but accidental palm contact with the touchpad can disrupt typing. Pressing F3 disables the touchpad with on-screen confirmation, improving usability. Pressing it again reactivates the touchpad.

Design for

Business Communication System

After speaking with several of our business-focused colleagues, we learned that media playback is increasingly important in business scenarios—especially for presentations. Videos help make sales pitches more engaging. In response, we enhanced the laptop’s audio system with stereo speakers plus a low-frequency woofer. The speaker grille uses ultra-fine 0.4mm micro-drilled holes on the C-side for aesthetic elegance, while the woofer is positioned on the base to create a balanced acoustic experience.

In today’s business world, video conferencing is essential. Trust and rapport in business communication are built through eye contact and gestures during video calls, no matter the conferencing platform. Therefore, beyond great audio, a high-quality microphone and camera are crucial. We moved away from Huawei’s former keyboard-camera design—which offered poor angles and subpar image quality—and relocated the webcam above the screen. Even more impressively, this became the first HONOR laptop to feature a 5.0-megapixel camera, offering an excellent video communication experience.

Be the Great Meeting Supporter

As for the structural integrity of the C-part, we focused on creating a sturdy housing. Unlike the thin aluminum shell of many past laptops, we adopted a dual-folded design to enhance strength. This structure acts as the core housing of the entire machine. Coupled with Cold Forge technology, the density and quality of the metal significantly increased, offering stronger protection and peace of mind for mobile professionals traveling with important files and components.

On the base panel, we used an array of precision-drilled intake vents (0.9mm in size) that align perfectly with the fan’s airflow zone for optimal cooling. These perforations echo the speaker grille in visual style, enhancing the overall design harmony. The rear rubber footbar features a curved bar design with raised ends—0.5mm higher than the center. This prevents hot air from re-entering the chassis and keeps the laptop firmly grounded. It also doubles as a grip area when removing the laptop from a bag. Made from TPU rubber with 85° hardness, it offers both tactile comfort and shock absorption.

Neat & Professionalism

The anodized aluminum surface underwent dozens of refinements with our factory partners to achieve the perfect finish. Instead of a typical metallic shine, we opted for a low-gloss, satin-like texture with a gloss value of 9–11, showcasing refined craftsmanship. In addition to the classic silver and space gray finishes, we introduced a new business-oriented “Noble Blue,” evoking leadership and elegance—just like a tailored suit, reflecting wisdom, sophistication, and confidence.

A Reflection of Professional Elegance

Designing HONOR’s first independently branded laptop was a truly meaningful experience. It marked a major milestone—not just for the company, but for me personally as a designer. I’m incredibly grateful to HONOR’s Terminal Division for the opportunity, and especially to Product Definition Team (PDT) Manager Ma Xuan for his strong support throughout the process. I’d also like to thank planner Wen Shuangxiong for his thoughtful input and architect Yue Yongbao for his technical insights and hardware expertise.
